On the 23rd September 2006 tragedy struck when a helicopter carrying several dignitaries, crew and WWF staff crashed in the high mountains of Nepal during bad weather.
- Tsunamis Indian Ocean Rim countries
The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which had a magnitude of 9.15, triggered a series of lethal tsunamis on December 26, 2004 that killed approximately 275,000 people (more than 168,000 in Indonesia alone), making it the deadliest tsunami in recorded history.
- Prestige tanker, oil spill, Spain
The Prestige sank on 19 November 2002, 211km off the coast of Spain. It went down with approx. 65,000 tonnes of oil on board – twice that spilt by the Exxon Valdez. The latest reports indicate that the sunken vessel is leaking more oil.
- Tasmin tanker, oil spill, Pakistan
28 July 2003: a stricken tanker, the Tasman Spirit, spills 28,000 tons of crude oil into the sea off the Karachi coast.
