Turtles have been on the Earth for more than 200 million years. They evolved before mammals, birds, and many reptiles. Marine turtles are found on all continents except Antarctica, yet six of the seven species of marine turtle are listed as endangered and three of these are considered to be critically endangered. © WWF-Canon / Martin HARVEY It is the reflection of light that causes the fur on polar bears to appear white, or yellowish white. In fact, the fur has no white pigment and is actually translucent. The polar bear is found in the Arctic and is the world’s largest terrestrial carnivore. Its Latin name, Ursus maritimus, means "sea bear", because polar bears have partially webbed feet, and spend much of their time in or around water. As human populations expand and natural habitats shrink, people and animals are coming into conflict over living space and food. Long, wooly fur protects the snow leopard from the harsh climate of the Himalayas, and its long tail helps the creature balance as it navigates the rugged, snowy terrain. Like newborn kittens, snow leopard cubs open their eyes only after a week or more but become very active by the time they are two months old. Many gorillas have been killed in the name of "self-defence" because if provoked for long enough, they will charge. However, gorillas charge to intimidate, not to injure, and rarely make contact. Gorillas are found in regions of central Africa, and they spend the majority of their lives on the ground. Although they do climb and spend some time standing on two legs, gorillas are usually found walking on all four limbs - or quadrupedal knuckle-walking. © WWF-Canon / Chris Martin BAHR Female sea turtles only come ashore to lay their eggs on sandy beaches during the appropriate season, while males never leave the sea. Most marine turtle species spend much of their lives in continental shelf waters, although leatherbacks tend to inhabit the open seas. Pandas are the only member of the bear family that do not hibernate. They have the digestive system of a carnivore, but have adapted to a vegetarian diet of mostly bamboo. Panda populations once spread from southern and eastern China to parts of neighboring Mynanmar and Vietnam but due to human encroachment and loss of habitat, the panda is now confined to small, isolated patches of forest in the mountains of southwest China. © WWF-Canon / Bernard DE WETTER
