WWF's work in Peru - Freshwater

WWF Peru Programme Office's main achievements and current activities include the following:
The second largest Ramsar site in the world
WWF led the process of creating the second largest Ramsar site in the world, the 4 million ha Abanico del Rio Pastaza wetland complex. Activities are underway to ensure the effective and participatory management of the area and the biodiversity it harbours. WWF Peru Programme Office will continue to promote conservation efforts in current protected areas and aims to expand these efforts over the coming years.
Natural resource management plans
Today, WWF works to support effective natural resource management in priority freshwater areas. Specifically, the PPO has provided financial and technical support within the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve for the development of natural resource management plans. In the Abanico del Rio Pastaza and its area of influence, including the Pastaza River Basin, the PPO is supporting the establishment of a participatory watershed management committee.
Mitigating damages caused by oil activities
WWF also conducts activities aiming to improve relationships between oil companies and communities, mitigate the damage caused by oil activities, and rehabilitate certain areas.
