WWF partners BioRegional are leading the development of a network of exemplary communities and other projects on each continent of the globe.

  • They will achieve world-beating standards in the sustainable use of energy and water, and waste-reduction strategies.
  • They will range from residential communities, to business and industrial parks, and even tourist resorts.

The communities will look to include schools, offices, transport networks, shops, hotels, and health and leisure facilities that enable people to live well - and well within the earth’s natural limits.

They will also aim to be cost-effective and competitive in order to demonstrate that One Planet Living is not a fringe ‘luxury’, but very much a mainstream concept.

BioRegional is possibly best known for the international award-winning BedZED project, the first - and still the largest - eco-village in the UK.

BedZED is a development of 100 homes and offices in south London.

Opened in 2002, it has received over 15,000 visitors from all around the world, including leading politicians and business leaders.

All of the structural steel was locally reclaimed, 83% of timber was reclaimed or FSC-certified, and 52% of materials were sourced within a 35 mile radius.

A 130 kilowatt waste biomass Combined Heat and Power unit provides electricity and hot water to all buildings.

BedZED residents have HALF the ecological footprint of an average Londoner.

The heating needs of a BedZED home are approximately 10% of those of an average home in the UK - thanks partly to this, the annual carbon savings of a typical BedZED resident are 5.1 tons of CO2 per person.
