One Planet Living: the solutions are there

WWF’s Living Planet Report tells us that different countries have a different responsibility for our global ecological debt.

For example, if everyone in the world consumed resources at the same rate as an average European, we would need 3 planets to live on.

And if we all lived like an average North American, we would need 5 planets.

WWF research also tells us that different certain sectors of the economy bear a greater responsibility for the impact on the earth’s ecosystems.

For example, businesses in the transport, food and energy sectors together account for 63% of global ecological footprint.

WWF is working with a number of partners to help make it easy, affordable and attractive for people to live sustainably. This includes supporting BioRegional’s programme in the creation of sustainable communities that can serve as examples for developers, governments and consumers.

WWF is also working with BioRegional who are supporting the creation of buyers groups to help bring down the unit costs of sustainable construction materials.

We are also developing a number of tools for decision-makers, business leaders and consumers, so that we can all begin to take the steps towards sustainable living.

This includes providing training for business managers, working with companies to develop a shared vision of sustainability, providing ecological accounting tools for local planners, and easy-to-use tipsheets that anyone can use.
